If you’re into retro furniture and deco items, you will absolutely adore Essaouira. The outer part of the ancient city counts a surprising offer of beautiful design stores, all tucked away in rambling houses. Keep your eyes open anytime, as an insignificant flight of stairs down the most discrete of alleys may actually lead to a drop-dead gorgeous vintage palace.
The coolest one of all, Elizir Gallery, is actually not so hard to spot: just at the entrance of the medina. Pushing its door, you enter a delicious world of retro kitsch that would leave your grandparents in awe. Everything there reminds you of simpler, much more stylish days -even if a big part of it could use a good scrub. Essaouira has a nice movie history, so unsurprisingly you’ll spot a great deal of retro movie posters and props here too. Special mention for the incredible collection of Moroccon royal’s portraits too… It takes some digging, but you can actually unearth amazing furniture here ànd the store ships to Europe, so you basically have no excuse not to buy that set of egg-shaped lounge chairs…
