As far as flea markets go, you won’t find them more elegant than the second hand book market in Lille’s prestigious Vieille Bourse. The 17th-century building consists of 24 identical housings surrounding an elegant courtyard. Upon entering, you’re meeting the intimidating gaze of Mercurius, god of trade. Every afternoon, from Tuesday till Sunday, the courtyard comes alive with countless stalls of vintage books and check games. The offer of course is predominantly French and this is definitely the place to score unique vintage children’s books such as Babar and the Bibliothèque Rose series, as well as some great retro comic books. Thrifting gone wild!
Place du Générale de Gaulle, every afternoon from Tuesday to Sunday.
Tip: when in Lille, do take the time to visit Roubaix and its amazing Art Deco swimming pool/museum, la Piscine!
